Vitamin B12 is required to make red blood cells and to maintain the myelin sheath around your nerves. Your body cannot manufacture it — it has to come from diet or supplementation.
Absorbing it from food is a multi-step process needing stomach acid and a protein called intrinsic factor. Age, some medications and several conditions interfere with those steps.
